We’ve all heard the phrase, “The money is in the list.” And while that’s certainly true, many of us, myself included, completely ignore the resources that are available to us as we’re building our business.

In fact, you probably have no idea how rich your network is. Why is that? Because you never asked.

You probably know people that are crack-shot Adwords gurus, or SEO masters, or amazing copywriters. But you probably don’t even know this about them. You probably just added them as a friend and said, “Hey I’ll saw your profile,” or “Welcome to the community” and never contacted them again.

What a waste!

Here’s the thing. How much to you value instant feedback? I would venture to say that most of us are building our businesses after our day jobs. Maybe you’re out showing the plan every night (ha!) or if you’ve gotten wise, you’re focusing on implementing Mike’s tactics.

Meaning that you’re probably holed up in your home office (or kitchen or dining room) all by yourself slaving away on a sales letter, keyword research, Adwords copy, SEO, or web design. Wouldn’t it be fabulous if you had some people that you could bounce ideas off of?

· What do you think of this sales letter?

· Is this paragraph better or is this one?

· Does this ad suck?

· What browser/OS are you using? Does my website look OK?

You could send someone and email and have to wait for their response, effectively stopping that project for the evening.

OR

What about a Private Message or an instant chat on the MS community? Fire off a quick message to 5 or 6 of your contacts that you know are online. Instant multiple answers, progress continues.

The truth is that this is how the big guys work.

I bet Mike Dillard has an inner circle of trusted experts that can give him quick feedback. I know for a fact that Fernando Ceballos does.

It’s not limited to the big guys. Isolated Web workers everywhere rely on their network for instant feedback. It keeps them moving and it keeps their output level high.

So you might ask yourself “How do a build a solid network?”

1. Seek them out.
This might be a no-brainer, but you’d be surprised how many people get onto social networking sites and expect people to just find them. It doesn’t work like that. Hit the pavement and actively work on growing your network.

2. Introduce yourself.
The business world is forged by solid first impressions. Someone that doesn’t think a proper introduction is in order just because it is online is sorely mistaken.

3. DON’T PITCH YOUR BUSINESS!
Let me repeat

DON’T PITCH YOUR BUSINESS

This is the online version of the 3-foot-rule, and it’s just as effective. It’s desperates-ville. When you do this you have taken no steps whatsoever to qualifying that prospect. You don’t even know if you WANT them in your business. Oh and by the way, if you do this, go back and re-read Magnetic Sponsoring again, because you obviously missed the message the first time.

4. List your areas of expertise.
No one is an expert on everything. If you have a lot of experience with copywriting, Adwords, SEO, web design, phone skills, etc. then let them know. And it will lead perfectly into the next one…

5. Offer Help.
Hey if you want to be able to rely on these people then you better be willing to reciprocate. Don’t think, “How can they help me?” Think, “How can I enhance this relationship by helping them?” Read Fernando’s article if you want to see a perfect example.

6. Thank or Welcome them.
And for goodness sake, be sincere. You think they can’t tell that you’re faking it just because it’s on the computer, well you’re wrong. It’s even MORE important online than it is in person, because you don’t have your body language to help you out. Make your words count double. Here’s a hint. We all know what autoresponders and broadcast messages look like. Copying and pasting is kinda obvious too. I’m not saying that you need a custom message for each person, but a little bit of personalization will go a long way.

Example: I was recently on a call with a phone skills guru. I kinda tagged along on the call and the guru didn’t know me from Adam. At the end of the call, I asked him if he was from Long Island (his accent gave him away). We chatted a bit and found out that we had lived in some of the same areas of New York State. After that, he told me I could call him anytime.

Obviously this was on the phone, but the same thing can be applied on the internet. In fact, it might be even easier. Do a little research. Trust me, it’s worth it.

7. Don’t abuse the connection.
The quickest route to being ignored is to bother the heck out of someone. I’m sure Mike is bombarded with partnerships, joint ventures offers, and just plain whiney crap all day long. How much to you think he responds to?

Tim Ferriss, author of the 4 Hour Work Week, has a great blog post about forging contacts with high power individuals. Don’t think you have to “keep your name in their heads.” If your provide value, you WILL be remembered.

Follow these tips and I guarantee you’ll find your network growing rapidly.
